Got a 1GB SD, need suggestions to fill it up
« on: October 21, 2005, 12:29:45 AM »

Recently got a 1GB SD card bundled with a digital camera purchase. What I did was swap the 1GB to my Palm and use the old 256MB SD for my camera.

This isn't final actually, because if I find I do not need so much memory for my Palm, I'll switch back. So I'm gathering suggestions on how to utilize the 1GB SD for my T5. I've only used 170MB and that includes some MP3s, 2 backup images, and a few programs. I know I can fill up more space storing MP3s and video but what about other uses? I listen to music but not so frequent that I need to carry 500MB worth of tunes. Video on my T5 takes up even less time (I only have one video, it's an MTV). I carry my documents and ebooks in my T5's internal drive.

Is a 1GB SD overkill for PDAs?

Put a few more movies in it and it'll fill up in no time Wink
I have no movies and no MP3s in my 1G SD and I am down to 300MB hehe

What I do is put the Palm installation files in a separate folder (and multiple sub-folders for each program) so that should I want to uninstall/reinstall it's a cinch without a PC - just copy over the files to Ram using a File utility like McFile. I can also just pass over proggies to others by slotting in the SD card into their Palms.  I think there must be quite a few hundred MB of Palm programs in my SD by now Wink

Nice idea regarding the Palm installation files! Do I need McFile specifically to do this? No, right? ZLauncher's file manager is what I use usually and I keep a copy of FileZ around too.

UPDATE: Other than loading more MP3s on it, I've put a lot of pictures on the SD as well. Maybe I'll load more videos as well. I'll see how the puny video Ipod's going to compare to my T5 Wink (Nah, just kidding. Video Ipod's got 30GB storage, at least!) I guess these are the only 'storage intensive' applications for my T5. I still have 20MB left in the 64MB storage heap...

I was previously using the Dell Axim for reading Plucker files but it is such a pain to move the PDBs to the SD of the Dell (no way to create a short cut to the SD on the Dell)
Now I have  gone back to reading the Plucker files on the Treo. Much faster one handed navigation. With Card Export II, it'sa cinch to copy the files over. Just mount the Treo "drive". Then use a batch file command to copy the files over.

Another suggestion ...

Keep multiple backup on the SD. If at all your T5 freeze up, you could do a full restore from SD backup.

I use a T3 and use Backupman to backup my RAM every night at 3.00am, and keep 3 of the latest backups. so I can restore my T3 to yesterday's sor 3 days ago. That already use roughly 160MB.

The Treo's memory is so small I have enough space still for 25+ backups  Cheesy

Ah, almost forgot about multiple backups! I already have two, maybe I'll make it three or four.

Maybe I'll move all my documents to the SD as well, rather than keeping them in the internal drive. Because internal drive doesn't get backed up. I've lost some important stuff that way since I lock my Palm, and the internal drive gets formatted if I hard-reset.

mine's half filled with Mp3s and about 100Mb of powerrun application (actually games), 2 backups and about 100pixs or so transferred from T610 whenever it snaps and still leave about 300MB unfilled (for contingencies).

if only palm could BT the mp3 music to headset like ppc could, then even 2GB not enough.  great gadget to have when you attend boring, unproductive but compulsory meetings/talks, listen away to fine music as someone yaks.  (for now, will have to carry a ppc to do that).

Haha. Guess it could be done with a 3.5mm jack stereo Bluetooth Audio Adapter

Yeap.. Movies and Mp3.. only files that could have filled up your 1GB card.. and you could have cry for 2GB card..
I never got enought space for my Movies and mp3...
Currently using 1GB card on my M28, 30Mb for 3x backup, 150Mb for palm programmes plus all my ebooks which included a streeth directory-30Mb, voice enable dictionary (Zdic) - with Zlauncher-all my programme are installed to card. 160Mb goes to photos, and the balance all goes to Mp3 and avi videos.. and I never got enought space for them..
