Hi guys, especially T3 users, I really wonder whether it is worth it to pay the repair fee of US$125 to get a replacement for my T3 or just forget it and upgrade to a new unit. I am already fed-up with the T3 and its slider and would just like the T5 or TX form factor.
I called Palm to ask whether I could just pay the repair fee or add on to the said fee to get a better model but they said that they did not do upgrades, so I am kinda stuck.
My T3 has a terrible digitzer drift and when I say terrible, I mean "cm" sized drifts ....sigh...... I do not mind paying a few hundred ringgit to get a better re-furbished model like T5 or TX, but I am not willing to spend another few hundred bucks to get another T3 as I have long been irritated by the slider. On the other hand, I am stuck with a wonky T3 which I cannot sell and which is a pain to use if I do not do anything about it!!!!
I really am tired of Palm's diminishing quality control .......

I am no longer a T3 user because I don't wait till its warranty to expire......I upgraded quickly to Treo 650 even though I have to be palmless for almost 3 months. No regret.

MacLod, why don't you try emailing Palm to ask if you can trade-in or upgrade to a new unit such as the TX? I think the TX brings a whole lot of new features to the table that it's worth considering for an upgrade. You get a much better battery life, 40% extra memory, NVFS so that you can let the battery die and not worry a thing and of course, WiFi. Oh, not to forget, you get picture support in your Contacts application. You sacrifice a bit of speed since flash memory is slower and the TX's CPU is slower as well but consider the gains. I own a T5 and despite some teething problems, it's been stable for months since the final ROM update. And I dare say it's the best Palm I ever had. Just wished it had a keyboard built-in and could do GSM/EDGE radio...

Very good suggestion ebernie - however, I did say that I had called Palm directly and they said that they do not have an upgrade or trade-in plan and I must pay to change it for the exact same model ......sigh....... so I guess I am truly stuck for now. I don't think I can sell it and it is such a pain to use it, and I really do not want to pay RM400 something for another T3, for the T5 ot TX yes but NOT the T3 again, hence undecided as what to do

Here's a suggestion: Sell it off cheaply letting any potential buyer know that the digitizer/screen will need replacement. At least you'll get a few hundred back to fund your new TX / T5 purchase. I've seen a couple of such sales before.

where to get few hundred for old T3 if a new one only $125? but T3's battery is really terrible. not worth paying the price when you can pay a little more for a T5 or TX.

A few sellers are selling T3s for about RM 700 at lelong.com.my. Let's say the screen costs RM 400, then just sell yours at RM 300 and let the user know that if he/she can't stand the digitizer drift, then replace the screen.

MaCLod,
just get a new Palm for you. you get better hardware and a new warranty line. TX got WiFi some more, can save you lot's of DATA charges whenever you are in WiFi enabled area. :-)
regards

That would be a Treo 650.

ebernie - you may have missed the point. Palm does not repair the screen (unless you want to get it done by a third party). what Palm does is give you a new or refurbished unit of the T3 for US$125. Normally I would not mind but the darn slider is irritating me, more now than when it was new, hence the hope of getting another PDA without a slider. drzalie - well, my ideal machine, at the moment is the Treo 650 - unfortunately I could not afford it and bought the Xplore M98 instead becos it was RM1,000 cheaper and boy did I regret it!!!

MaCLod, looks like misunderstood you. Then you're in a bit of a sticky situation. Why are you regretting the M98? It seems to have respectable specs.
drzalie, very good observation. But several factors are keeping me away from the Treo 650 for now.
