My T5 had been updated with the Palm update 1.1. It is running smoothly without any crashes. Just a few days ago, my computer experienced a major failure and I had to change both the motherboard and the processor. Although all the programs I had on the hard disc were safe, yet they are not appearing when I click ' All Programs ' ( any idea how to make them appear on the All Programs ? ) . So now I cannot get the Palm Desktop up and running. I thought I will re install the Palm Desktop program from the Palm disc. If I do this I will have to apply the update program to this once again. But my handheld has already been updated before. In order to update the Desktop, I will also have to hotsync the handheld. This will mean that the new update 1.1 will overwrite the old update 1.1 on the handheld. Will this cause a problem ? Will all my data in the handheld be lost? Can I just update the Palm Desktop without involving the handheld? Actuall, I have a backup program on my handheld which backsup once a day all programs to the SD card. Can I then Update my Desktop and handheld without fear as I can repopulate the palm with the backed up programs from the card? Any suggestion to solve this problem will be much appreciated. Regards

Once you have backup all the data in your SD, you can almost do whatever you want with your computer....almost. If you have upgraded your firmware of your T5, it will stay there. You can even do a hard reset & restore back all the data to your handheld from the SD. BTW what software you use to backup your T5? I am using Backupman.
As for the Palm Desktop update, IINM you only update the desktop software, not your T5. Please correct me if I am wrong.
So in your case, if you have a good backup, just reinstall your Palm Desktop again and see what happened. Then just do a hotsync.

Thanks a million Tembeling. I'll try it right away and let you know how it went. Am I glad I found this site I belonged to KVPUG where I received excellent advice from people like NTech, Palmdoc and others. I was shocked to learn that KVPUG is now kaput Have all of the KVPUG members migrated to palmx then? If so , let the fun and games begin! Kind Regards carlosox

carlosox, I just read what you did with your PC (keeping the programs around, just reinstalling windows?). This will not work. There are shortcuts, settings and other required files that are installed into various folders in your Windows directory when you install a program. If you wipe out Windows, you'll have to reinstall most of your programs again. This is only a general rule as some programs bypass installation altogether. Obviously, these programs can be run again without reinstallation.
I wonder though... why did a disk failure cause you to change motherboard and CPU?
As for your question regarding your T5: i. the ROM update will always be there. It doesn't matter if you hard-reset or even zero-out-reset it. Reinstalling a new Palm Desktop won't affect it as well. You will need to reinstall PD in order to use it again. And no, any installation on Windows for PD will not affect your T5. You will however, need to reinstall any update on PD since the one that came in the CD is an older one. (Note: I thought T5's PD is unique and shouldn't be updated???) ii. Yeah, you can update PD then restore everything in your T5, then sync again.

Thanks ebernie. The computer technician is still not sure what caused it but said that the computer was heating up much too quickly before the repair was made. I don't think I was ripped off since the repairman is well known for his honesty and integrity.. I'll carry out the necessary steps to get the PD up and running and report back. Tembeling, I too have Backupman-not a bad program Thanks and Regards carlosox

Reinstalled the PD and performed hotsync. Only minor problem encountered ( had to re-install the RSS reader Quicknews). Everything working fine. Thanks a lot to everyone.
