Treo 650 - Is the right gadget to grasp now?
« on: October 14, 2005, 09:12:20 PM »

It seems more and more palm users have switched over to smartphone like Treo 650 and I'm tempted too....... Roll Eyes

But I'm still having some reservations like whether I could get use to the smaller screen of Treo with 320x320 resolution versus my existing T3 with 320x480? Whether Treo 650 is the right gadget to invest now while rumors are talking about Treo 700p to be introduced soon?

It would be nice to have some advises from existing Treo users especially for those using T3 before.

I can't really answer your question but I can say that Treo650 is a marvellous piece of pdaphone (as compared to a smartphone). I was a T3 user before and I have to admit I miss its huge 320x480 screen but 320x320 is sufficient for most of the applications I am using most of the time like Agendus. Its even OK to read & write using DocsToGo. Even reading PDF files is also OK. However viewing excel files is a headache. With T3 last time I can change to landscape mode & viewing spreadsheet is great.

I am not sure about the timing tho'. Yeah, you'll be devastated if new PalmOS Treo is launched a day after you had purchased an old one.

Once the T|X reached our shores, I believe there will be some downward revision of the Treo 650 price. So if there is no hurry, just wait for it.

Thanks for all the great feedback and inputs. My hand is pretty itchy now and may have to take the risk to get one soon.....

Can always go for 2nd hand ones - but choose wisely. I've come across a few Treo 650's which are just a few months old at www.lelong.com.my. Do a search for 'treo' there. Prices range from RM 1.8K - 2.0K. Quite a good buy.

Well I didn't think paying RM2400 or therabouts for a new Treo650 at this point in time is worth it since there will be new Treos round the corner (I suspect a new Palm Powered Treo will be announced by the end of the year), and besides the Treo650 is rather underpowered in the Ram area (only 23 MB useable)
It was the right time for me though since my SE phones were beginning to exhibit annoying features like lockups, spontaneous resets and hanging. I was worried that if I were to pay RM2400 for a Treo and then also experience lockups, spontaneous resets and hanging that would not do!!
I got my Treo650 2nd hand fromEbay Malaysia for RM1550. It's about 6 months old I think (the owner won it in a Company Raffle and hardly used it) I think it's really worth it at the price. Anyway it's a good smartphone, and I do not encounter frequent lockups, resets or hanging. Some heavy 'net users do experience slowdowns in low signal areas - especially when connecting say an IM 24/7. The diminishing dbcache is still an issue but dbcache tool helps clear it out.
I saw 2 Treo 650s go for RM16xx shortly after that in Lelong. One was a boxed/new item. Really a bargain!
You could be lucky but you have to watch Lelong and Ebay Malaysia.
If buying 2nd hand, I would prefer COD and inspect the merchandise before parting with the cash.

Is it tied to a service plan?

Really appreciate your great effort of sharing, Palmdoc. Thanks!

Unfortunately I've missed this opportunity as I was out of country for quite sometime. I've played a while a unit from my friend, pretty impressed with the built as well as the phone functionaliity, very handy too! May consider to get a new one next week

I found three current Treo 650 offers on eBay Malaysia:
TREO 650 PALM USED 90%NEW RM1688
CHRISTMAS SALE - BRAND NEW TREO 650
TREO 650 I PALM ONE

Anyone familiar with the three sellers?

Yes, I'm in the market for a Treo 650. My t68i is beginning to show its age.

And I googled for the Treo 700 and learned that the Windows version is available, but not the Palm version. Apparently, the screen is only 240x240.

IIANM, new Treo650s were going for RM1888 during PC Fair as some promotion. Perhaps the offer is still on from Palm Asia...
I would skip the WinTreo 700w. A slew of Palm powered Treos are expected in 2006....

Thanks, palmdoc. Can always depend on you for a quick reply and help.

The Palm Malaysia site is still listing the Treo 650 at RM2,488/-. On the home page, Treo 650 is featured with a special offer which turns out to be a free Bluetooth headset worth RM276/-.

I can't wait for the new Palm powered Treos in 2006, and after looking at the 650's specs, I think it's good enough. I'll shop around the Palm retailers.
