What's Next for Palm PDA
« on: October 07, 2005, 12:05:04 PM »

Hmm..

Currently using Tungsten T3. It's been almost 3 years I'm using it. Wondering what's next on line for me? My initial thoughts would be to go for LifeDrive. Love the big disk space, wifi, BT, etc...

And don't think I want to go for the other OS. Just no my preferences. Say whatever about the other, but please, save it. I heard it all.

Care for comment on LifeDrive? What's pro and cons about it?

Cheers.

I've heard too many cases of bad stories regarding the LifeDrive to consider it a PDA to depend upon. Some interesting quotes:

"I don't trust it"
"Everytime I switch apps, I pray"
"Soft-resets takes 6 minutes"
"Lag for large apps (Agendus, AvantGo, etc)"

After reading a lot of user experiences over at PalmAddict, it's obvious that the LD has issues with both software and hardware. The lag is something you can't solve. And the instability is due to software which may or may not get solved. So...

The best bet now would be the TX. It has the best of both worlds, ample RAM (you can always get bigger SD) with dual wire-less. And make no mistake, if it's as stable as a T5, after the patch, it's definitely more usable than the LD. Minus the lag too.

I echo ebernie's sentiments.
I think the TX would be a better bet.

Tungsten Tx would be great with the 128MB RAM.
Together with a 2GB SD card, it would be better than lifedrive.

Yes, exactly what I thought. With the T5, the SD card would occasionally have to come off because WiFi isn't built-in but with the TX, the SD can always be inside.

Tungsten T5 seems a good idea. However, it doesn't have WiFi capabilities, only BT. Any other news on new PDA from Palm?

October 12th is the rumoured launch dates but if you go here, you will see a TX in action. The site is in Chinese but the pictures are what's important. And there's of course some English keywords that you'll be able to make out.

Come on, lets wait for a resurgence from Palm... The LD seems to be a good start, hopefully the company can produce other excellent PDAs based on this one!

Features i'm hoping for include: built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, cellphone capabilities, camera, MP3 player, voice recorder...

The LifeDrive is not doing well here I suspect - bulky, sluggish and buggy. The price is quite steep too and that will deter alot of buyers. Now if the TX is priced around 1300, then it stands a chance of doing well.
We'll see.

More like RM 1288 and RM 499 for the new handhelds. http://www.palm/my/

This translates to US 338 and US 131 respectively. Why are the rest of the world paying more than the retail price in the US? Prices in Europe and even non-mainland US are more expensive. What gives?
